Argentinean baritone Iván Paley, born in Bogotŕ, Colombia in 1979, studied piano and composition as a child, composed his first piano sonatas by the age of 12 and gave concerts as a solo pianist. The young baritone continued his studies in vocal performance with Prof. Franklin Summers at the Opera Department of the Miami University (USA), and then began his career as a concert and opera singer. Iván Paley has so far appeared as a guest at the Teatro Real Madrid, Teatro Colón Buenos Aires, Nationaltheater Mannheim, Teatro Colón Bogotŕ, the Florida Grand Opera Miami and at the Theater Kaiserslautern, performing lyric baritone roles by Purcell, Gluck, Mozart, Weber and Verdi He has worked with renowned conductors such as Julius Rudel, Leopold Hager, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Alejandro Posada, Jonathan Nott, Friedrich Haider, Jesus López Cobos and Wolfgang Sawallisch.
Since moving to Vienna in 2000, Mr. Paley has directed his artistic focus to German lied and has perfected interpretation and vocal technique with Kammersängerin Edith Mathis (University of Music and Fine Arts, Vienna) and Prof. Hanna Ludwig in Salzburg. He has given numerous recitals of song cycles of Schubert, Schumann, Beethoven, Brahms and Wolf in ongoing collaborations with pianists Stephan Matthias Lademann, Russel Ryan, Wolfram Rieger, Justus Zeyen and Friedrich Haider. A passionate advocate of the vocal works of Gustav Mahler, Iván Paley began recording the composer’s entire lied opus for voice and piano with record label telos music vocal, a project he expects to complete by 2008. Together with Diana Damrau, the artist recorded the first edition of the complete "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" in its original version for two voices and piano, which in 2004 was awarded the "Toblacher Recording Prize" of the Gustav Mahler Society. The second release, Mahler's "Lied von der Erde" for piano, baritone and tenor, was recorded together with Robert Dean Smith and Stephan Matthias Lademann and presented live at the Vlaamse Opera.
Solo concerts and recitals have taken Mr. Paley to Germany, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, the USA, Argentina, Spain, Croatia and Colombia, in addition to appearances in Bad Kissingen, Rosengarten Mannheim, Alten Oper Frankfurt, Konzerthaus Dortmund, Bremer Glocke, Theater an der Wien as well as other renowned music festivals (Schleswig Holstein, Rheingau, Ludwigsburg and Augsburger Sommer). Upcoming engagements for 2007 include liederabends and Japan tour with soprano Edita Gruberova.
The artist recently recorded a lieder CD with Edita Gruberova, released by Nightingale Classics as well as a CD of Schumann's "Myrten" cycle on the Telos label. Future releases include Schubert's "Schwanengesang" for Nightingale Classics. |
